Each year the Buffalo Sabres’ organization, the players and their wives take on projects in an attempt to put smiles on the faces of some of our neighbors. Dealing with serious illness is diificult for al of us. Sometimes a visit and a special “pick me up” is just what the doctor ordered. As a result, the Sabres’ players make hospital visits to our special fans during their time of need.
Players continued the tradition of making holiday time visits to Children’s Hospital this past year, bringing with them gifts and toys for their special friends. Their words of encouragment bring a smile to children and parents alike.
The 2000-2001 season saw the Sabres once again “Take to the Runway” for the kids. For the third consecutive year, the club “teamed up” on the fashion runway for their friends at Children’s Hospital. The Harbor club at HSBC Arena hosted the Sabres Holiday Fashion Show with fans thrilled to see their favorite players up close in new holiday attire. This year’s proceeds of $6,000 will be used for the renovation and expansion of the hospital’s Intensive Care Nursery.
The player’s “better-halves” took on numerous charitable causes as well this past year. The Sabres wives delivered Christmas gifts to women at the Buffalo City Mission’s Cornerstone Manor. After completing the shopping for all the necessities , including clothes and toys for the children, the Sabres’ wives stopped by the home to spend time with the women and tour the shelter. Cornerstone Manor provides women who have been victims of domestic violence, drug abuse, job loss, or unhealthy living conditions with shelter and counseling during an extremely difficult period in their lives.
